Which Brazilian won the 1997 French Open men's singles title as an unseeded player?
Answer
Gustavo Kuerten
Answer
Gustavo Kuerten
Gustavo Kuerten won the 1997 French Open men's singles title as an unseeded player.
The Brazilian defeated former champion Sergi Bruguera in the final, winning 6–3, 6–4, 6–2. It was Kuerten's first Grand Slam singles championship and made him the first Brazilian man to win a major singles title.
Kuerten's run was especially remarkable because he entered the tournament ranked No. 66 in the world. He defeated three recent French Open champions along the way: Thomas Muster, Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Bruguera. After the victory, his ranking rose to No. 15.
A common mix-up is Marcelo Ríos, another prominent clay-court player from that era. Ríos was seeded seventh in the 1997 draw but lost in the fourth round; he did not win the title. Kuerten was the first unseeded men's champion at Roland-Garros since Mats Wilander in 1982.
