Which Brazilian national park is the largest in the country?

The story behind the answer

Tumucumaque National Park is the largest national park in Brazil. Its official English name is Tumucumaque Mountains National Park, but the stored answer identifies the same protected area.

Created on August 23, 2002, the park protects about 38,874 square kilometres across the Brazilian states of Amapá and Pará. It lies within the Amazon rainforest and borders French Guiana and Suriname, forming part of the biologically important Guiana Shield.

Tumucumaque is also described as the world’s largest tropical-forest national park. Its remote landscape includes rivers, mountains and largely intact rainforest supporting jaguars, primates, aquatic turtles and harpy eagles. The highest point in Amapá, at about 701 metres, is inside the park.

A common mix-up is confusing it with Brazil’s famous Amazonia National Park or Iguaçu National Park. Those parks are internationally well known, but neither is close to Tumucumaque in area. The name is sometimes shortened in English, while “Mountains” appears in the park’s official article title.
