In Taylor Swift’s “august,” Augustine yearns for a 17-year-old boy named James.
James is one corner of Folklore’s fictional teenage love triangle. He has a brief summer romance with Augustine but eventually abandons her and reconciles with Betty, his former lover. The song is therefore told from the perspective of the person left behind rather than from James’s point of view.
Swift distributes the story across three tracks. “august” belongs to Augustine, “cardigan” belongs to Betty, and “betty” belongs to James. Hearing the songs together reveals overlapping memories and different interpretations of the same events.
The character is sometimes confused with a real person because Swift’s songwriting often draws public attention to possible autobiographical clues. Folklore deliberately emphasized invented characters and narratives, so James should be understood as part of the album’s fictional storytelling framework.
