Which bowler has the best bowling figures in a single IPL match?

The story behind the answer

Alzarri Joseph has the best bowling figures in a single IPL match, taking 6 wickets for 12 runs.

Joseph produced the performance on his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians against Sunrisers Hyderabad on 6 April 2019 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium. He opened with a wicket-maiden, dismissing David Warner, and then added five more wickets while conceding only 12 runs in four overs. Mumbai defended a modest total and won by 40 runs.

His 6/12 surpassed the previous IPL record of 6/14, achieved by Rajasthan Royals’ Sohail Tanvir in the inaugural 2008 season. It also made Joseph the first bowler to take a five-wicket haul on an IPL debut alongside Andrew Tye, who achieved the feat in 2017.

Bowling figures are written as wickets/runs conceded, so 6/12 means six dismissals while allowing 12 runs. Adam Zampa and Tanvir have also taken six wickets in an IPL match, but neither conceded fewer runs than Joseph. That distinction makes Joseph’s figures the competition record.
