Which Boston school, founded in 1635, is the oldest public school in the United States?

The story behind the answer

Boston Latin School, founded in 1635, is the oldest public school in the United States.

The Town of Boston established the school on April 23, 1635. Its first classes were held in the home of its initial master, Philemon Pormort. The school was modeled on the Free Grammar School of Boston, England, and emphasized Latin, Greek, rhetoric, and classical learning.

Boston Latin was intended to educate boys from different social classes, although it admitted only male students for much of its history. It became coeducational in 1972, when it admitted its first mixed-gender class.

The school remains a public exam school serving grades 7 through 12. Its historical claim is sometimes confused with that of Collegiate School in New York, which is often described as the oldest school in the United States but is a private institution.
