Which book of prayers included a special service for England’s annual 5 November thanksgiving after the Gunpowder Plot?
Answer
The Book of Common Prayer
Answer
The Book of Common Prayer
The Book of Common Prayer included a special service for England’s annual 5 November thanksgiving after the Gunpowder Plot.
Following the failed attack of 1605, Parliament established an annual day of public thanksgiving. The service was inserted into the Church of England’s Book of Common Prayer, making the commemoration part of the country’s official Anglican worship.
The wording presented the survival of James I and Parliament as divine protection and condemned the alleged Catholic conspiracy. Churches used the service on 5 November for more than two centuries, alongside sermons and public ceremonies.
The observance changed over time. The statutory requirement was repealed in 1859, and the special prayer was later removed from the prayer book. Bonfires and fireworks nevertheless kept the date prominent in popular culture. The prayer-book service is therefore an important link between the original state thanksgiving and the more secular festival celebrated today.
