Which book is the third and final volume of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

The Return of the King is the third and final volume of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

The book was published in the United Kingdom on 20 October 1955, following The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers. Its title refers chiefly to Aragorn’s return and eventual accession as king, although the story also concludes Frodo and Sam’s quest to destroy the One Ring.

Tolkien preferred different subtitle arrangements during the work’s publication history, and he did not originally intend the novel to be divided into three separately titled volumes. The final volume includes the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, the destruction of the Ring, Aragorn’s coronation, and the departure of the Ring-bearers.
