Which body unified London’s Underground railways in 1933?
Answer
London Passenger Transport Board
Answer
London Passenger Transport Board
The London Passenger Transport Board unified London’s Underground railways in 1933.
The board was created by the London Passenger Transport Act 1933 and began operating on 1 July 1933. It brought together the Underground Electric Railways Company of London, the Metropolitan Railway, London’s municipal tramways, and many bus operators within a single organization.
The board operated under the public-facing name London Transport. Its area extended beyond the Underground, covering buses, trams, trolleybuses, and other local transport. This unified structure made coordinated fares, services, vehicle design, and public information possible.
The London Passenger Transport Board is sometimes confused with London Underground Limited, the later company name associated specifically with the Tube. London Underground Limited was established much later, in 1985, while the 1933 board was the major interwar consolidation body.
