Second Continental Congress
Answer
Second Continental Congress
The Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence that America250 commemorates.
The Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia during the American Revolutionary War. It served as the governing body for the thirteen colonies that declared independence from Great Britain and coordinated the colonial war effort. On July 4, 1776, it adopted the final wording of the Declaration.
The Congress had succeeded the First Continental Congress, which met in 1774 to coordinate a response to British policies. The later body became responsible for decisions involving independence, diplomacy, military affairs, and finances. Its members included prominent figures such as John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and John Hancock.
The Second Continental Congress is sometimes confused with the Constitutional Convention of 1787. The Constitutional Convention drafted the United States Constitution more than a decade later; it did not adopt the Declaration of Independence.
