Bob Marley’s song “Jamming” became his first UK Top 10 hit in 1977.
The song appeared on Exodus, Bob Marley and the Wailers’ ninth studio album, released in 1977. Its relaxed but purposeful sound helped make it one of Marley’s most recognizable recordings, while its lyrics celebrate unity and resilience.
“Jamming” reached number nine on the UK Singles Chart. This is sometimes confused with “One Love/People Get Ready,” which became a major UK hit later, reaching number five in 1984 after Marley’s death. “Waiting in Vain,” also from Exodus, reached number 27 in the UK in 1977.
The word “jamming” refers to musicians playing together, but Marley used it more broadly as a joyful expression of communal celebration. The track remains one of the signature songs associated with Marley’s international breakthrough during the late 1970s.
