“One Love” became a 1984 posthumous international hit in a new version.
The song first appeared as “One Love” on The Wailers’ 1970 album Soul Rebels. It was later reworked as “One Love/People Get Ready” for the 1977 album Exodus, incorporating elements associated with Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions song “People Get Ready.”
A new version was released in 1984 after Marley’s death as part of the promotion for the compilation album Legend. Its video helped establish Marley as an international symbol of unity and peace, and the song became one of his most recognizable recordings.
The title is sometimes shortened to “One Love,” but the 1984 single is commonly identified as “One Love/People Get Ready.” It should not be confused with Marley’s separate songs “Jamming” or “Could You Be Loved.”
