Legend became one of the best-selling reggae albums ever.
Island Records released the compilation Legend on 8 May 1984, several years after Bob Marley’s death. It collected many of his best-known recordings, including “One Love/People Get Ready,” “No Woman, No Cry,” “Could You Be Loved,” and “Redemption Song.”
The album introduced Marley’s music to listeners who had not followed his original studio albums. It became a long-running seller and is widely regarded as the most commercially successful reggae album in history.
Legend is a compilation rather than a new studio album. That distinction matters because Marley’s final studio album was Uprising, released in 1980. The compilation’s track selection also emphasizes Marley’s accessible, internationally familiar songs, while other albums present more political, spiritual, or album-length ideas.
