Bob Marley and the Wailers’ song “Zimbabwe” appears on the 1979 album Survival.
Survival was released by Island Records in 1979 and is one of Marley’s most explicitly political albums. Its songs address African unity, colonialism, oppression, and the African diaspora, giving the record a more urgent tone than some of Marley’s earlier romantic and spiritual releases.
The title track “Zimbabwe” became especially associated with the country’s liberation struggle. Marley later performed the song at Zimbabwe’s independence celebrations in 1980, making it an important part of the public soundtrack of the new nation.
Listeners sometimes confuse Survival with Uprising, Marley’s final studio album. Uprising followed in 1980 and included songs such as “Redemption Song,” while Survival is the album specifically associated with “Zimbabwe.”
