Which bird lays the largest egg of any living bird?

The story behind the answer

The ostrich lays the largest egg of any living bird.

An ostrich egg typically weighs about 1.4 kilograms, although individual eggs vary. It is roughly 15 centimetres long and has a thick, glossy shell. Even though it is the largest bird egg, it is relatively small compared with the size of the adult bird because ostriches must produce eggs that can be incubated in a communal nest.

Ostriches are native to Africa and are the largest and heaviest living birds. They cannot fly, but their long legs make them extremely fast runners. A powerful kick is also an important defense against predators.

Several females may lay eggs in one nest, with the dominant female’s eggs placed in the center. Both sexes take turns incubating them, with males more active at night because their darker plumage is less visible after sunset. Emu and cassowary eggs are large, but smaller than ostrich eggs.
