Which bird is the tallest living bird species?

The story behind the answer

The common ostrich is the tallest living bird species. Adult males can reach about 2.75 metres in height, making this flightless African bird taller than any other modern bird.

Ostriches cannot fly because their large bodies and reduced wings are not suited to powered flight. Instead, they have exceptionally long, strong legs and are among the fastest running birds. Their two-toed feet are unusual among living birds and help them move efficiently across open ground.

The male is usually black and white, while the female is generally grey-brown. In a communal nest, one dominant female may lay many eggs, and the male commonly helps incubate them at night, when his darker plumage provides better camouflage.

Ostriches are often described as burying their heads in the sand, but that is a myth. They may lower their heads to inspect or turn eggs, feed, or remain inconspicuous when threatened. Their real defenses include speed, powerful kicks, and keen eyesight.
