Which bird is famous for having a bill shaped like a large shoe?
Answer
Shoebill
Answer
Shoebill
The shoebill is famous for having a bill shaped like a large shoe.
The shoebill’s enormous bill is broad, deep, and hooked at the tip, giving the species its common name. It lives in large freshwater swamps of tropical central and eastern Africa, where it often stands motionless among papyrus and other wetland plants while waiting for prey.
Shoebills mainly eat fish, but they can also take frogs, snakes, water birds, and small mammals. Their bill’s sharp hook helps them seize and tear prey. A sudden lunge, often preceded by a characteristic bill-clattering display, can end a long period of stillness.
The species was once placed near storks because of its appearance and behavior, but modern evidence places it closer to pelicans and other water birds. It is also called the whalehead or whale-headed stork, although it is not a true stork. Habitat loss and disturbance threaten many shoebill populations.
