Which bird has two toes on each foot, unlike most birds?

The story behind the answer

The ostrich has two toes on each foot, unlike most birds.

One toe is much larger and bears a broad, hoof-like claw, while the smaller inner toe helps with balance. This reduced foot structure is an adaptation for running. Ostriches are the largest living birds and can reach speeds of about 70 kilometres per hour over short distances.

Most birds have three or four toes, so the ostrich’s two-toed foot is an especially useful identification feature. Emus and cassowaries, which are also flightless ratites, retain three toes. The ostrich’s long legs and powerful muscles allow it to cover ground efficiently in open African habitats.

Ostriches cannot fly because their body plan is specialized for terrestrial running rather than powered flight. They use their wings for balance, courtship displays, and changing direction. Their strong legs can also deliver dangerous kicks when threatened.
