Which bird has the largest eyes of any living land animal?
Answer
Ostrich
Answer
Ostrich
The ostrich has the largest eyes of any living land animal.
An ostrich’s eyes are roughly 5 centimetres across, making each one larger than the eye of any other living land animal. Large eyes provide a broad field of view and help this flightless bird detect predators across open African habitats. Ostriches also have long necks and stand high above the ground, improving their ability to scan distant surroundings.
The common ostrich is the world’s largest and heaviest living bird. It cannot fly because its body is too large and its wings are not built for powered flight, but it has exceptionally strong legs. It can run at speeds of roughly 70 kilometres per hour for short periods.
Ostrich eyes are sometimes confused with those of large marine animals, whose eyes can be much bigger. The comparison here concerns living land animals, not every animal on Earth. Ostriches also have a protective third eyelid that helps shield the eye from dust and glare.
