Rosita is the bilingual Sesame Street monster who speaks both English and Spanish. She is a turquoise, five-year-old Muppet known for sharing language, music, and aspects of her Mexican heritage with her friends on the Street.
Rosita was introduced to Sesame Street in 1991 and became the show’s first regular bilingual Muppet. Her ability to move naturally between English and Spanish reflects the bilingual experiences of many children and families, while also helping young viewers hear and learn words in both languages.
The character was originally called Rosita, La Monstrua de las Cuevas, or “Rosita, the Cave Monster.” She was initially designed with a fruit-bat-like appearance and wings, although the wings were removed in 2004 and restored in 2021. Rosita also plays the guitar and is portrayed as playful and optimistic.
A common mix-up is choosing Zoe or Abby Cadabby because both are prominent female monsters. Prairie Dawn is a human-like girl character, not a monster. Rosita is the specific character identified with regular English-and-Spanish bilingual speech.
