Lemonade was Beyoncé’s visual album released in 2016 as both music and film.
The project premiered on HBO on April 23, 2016, alongside the release of Beyoncé’s sixth studio album. Its music is accompanied by a one-hour film combining poetry, spoken narration, performance, and imagery connected to themes of identity, family, betrayal, healing, and Black womanhood.
Lemonade includes songs such as “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” and “Freedom.” It features collaborations with artists including Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd, and James Blake.
The title is often discussed through the proverb about making lemonade from lemons, which appears in the project’s broader emotional and cultural framework. Lemonade is distinct from Black Is King, Beyoncé’s 2020 visual album connected to The Lion King: The Gift.
