Lemonade is Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album built around songs and accompanying films.
The sixth studio album was released on April 23, 2016, after the premiere of an hour-long film on HBO. Its music moves through R&B, soul, rock, blues, pop, and hip-hop, while its visuals draw on Black American history, Southern landscapes, and themes of identity, family, betrayal, and resilience.
The album includes “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” and “Freedom.” It features guest appearances from artists including Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, James Blake, and The Weeknd. “Formation” became especially associated with the album’s cultural and political impact.
Lemonade is sometimes described as only a traditional studio album, but Beyoncé presented it as a multimedia project. The title also connects to the saying about making lemonade from lemons, which appears in the album’s broader emotional and historical framework.
