Which Beyoncé song features Jay-Z and begins with a famous brass sample from “Are You My Woman”?

The story behind the answer

Beyoncé’s song featuring Jay-Z and built around a brass sample from “Are You My Woman” is “Crazy in Love.”

Released in 2003, “Crazy in Love” was the lead single from Beyoncé’s debut solo album, Dangerously in Love. The recording opens with a striking horn hook sampled from “Are You My Woman (Tell Me So),” a 1970 song by the Chicago soul group the Chi-Lites. Producer Rich Harrison created the sample-based foundation before Beyoncé recorded her vocal.

Jay-Z appears on the song’s rap verse, and the collaboration became an important early example of the pair’s musical partnership. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks and reached number one in the United Kingdom and several other countries.

The song won Grammy Awards for Best R&B Song and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration in 2004. It is sometimes confused with “Drunk in Love,” another Beyoncé-and-Jay-Z hit, but that track appeared on the 2013 album Beyoncé.
