Destiny’s Child had its first Billboard Hot 100 number-one single with “Bills, Bills, Bills.”
Released in 1999, the song was the lead single from the group’s second studio album, The Writing’s on the Wall. Its lyrics describe a relationship in which a partner repeatedly creates financial and personal problems, giving the track a sharply conversational R&B perspective.
“Bills, Bills, Bills” was written by Beyoncé, LaShawn Daniels, Cory Rooney, and Fred Jerkins III, among others, and produced by Kevin “She’kspere” Briggs. It became Destiny’s Child’s first chart-topper on the Billboard Hot 100.
The group later achieved additional number-one singles including “Say My Name,” “Independent Women Part I,” and “Bootylicious.” The recording is therefore an important milestone before Beyoncé’s solo career reached its own peak.
