Lemonade is Beyoncé’s 2016 album featuring a visual film and songs addressing Black identity, womanhood, and marriage.
Released on April 23, 2016, Lemonade followed a surprise-release strategy: Beyoncé announced it alongside an hour-long HBO film of the same name. The project combines R&B, pop, hip-hop, soul, rock, country, and blues influences.
Its themes move through stages of emotional conflict and healing while connecting personal experience with broader African American history and culture. The visual project includes poetry by Warsan Shire and imagery referencing Black women’s resilience.
The album received widespread critical acclaim and earned Beyoncé the Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album. It is distinct from the self-titled Beyoncé, which appeared in 2013, and Renaissance, which began a later three-act project in 2022.
