Lemonade is the Beyoncé album that includes the 2016 visual project and the song “Formation.”
Released on April 23, 2016, Lemonade is Beyoncé’s sixth solo studio album. It was accompanied by an hour-long film broadcast on HBO, combining music videos, poetry, and imagery into a continuous visual narrative. The project was organized around themes including betrayal, ancestry, resilience, and Black identity.
The album contains “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” and “All Night.” Its release followed a surprise-drop model associated with Beyoncé’s 2013 self-titled album, although Lemonade was announced through a short promotional lead-up before its full arrival.
Lemonade received widespread critical acclaim and earned the Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album. It is distinct from Renaissance, Beyoncé’s 2022 dance-oriented seventh studio album.
