Which Best Picture winner is about a flower seller named Eliza Doolittle?
Answer
My Fair Lady
Answer
My Fair Lady
The Best Picture winner about flower seller Eliza Doolittle is My Fair Lady.
George Cukor’s 1964 musical follows Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower seller who becomes the subject of phonetics professor Henry Higgins’s wager. Higgins attempts to teach her refined English and manners so she can pass as a duchess, while Eliza increasingly questions who controls her identity and future.
The film adapts the 1956 stage musical by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, which was itself based on George Bernard Shaw’s 1913 play Pygmalion. Audrey Hepburn plays Eliza opposite Rex Harrison as Higgins. Hepburn’s singing was largely dubbed by Marni Nixon, a production detail that became a frequent point of discussion; Julie Andrews, who originated the stage role, was not cast in the film.
My Fair Lady won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Harrison. It is sometimes confused with Gigi or Oliver!, other lavish musical films, but neither was the Best Picture winner for 1964; My Fair Lady took the prize at the 37th Academy Awards.
