Which 1955 romantic drama won both the Palme d'Or and Best Picture?

The story behind the answer

Which 1955 romantic drama won both the Palme d'Or and Best Picture? Marty did.

Directed by Delbert Mann and written by Paddy Chayefsky, Marty follows a shy, 34-year-old Bronx butcher whose family pressures him to marry. Its understated story about loneliness, self-worth, and ordinary romance resonated with audiences and critics.

Marty first appeared as a 1953 television play starring Rod Steiger. Chayefsky expanded it into the 1955 film, which starred Ernest Borgnine and Betsy Blair. Borgnine won the Academy Award for Best Actor, while the film also took Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The Cannes honor is correctly called the Palme d'Or: 1955 was the first year that name was used for the festival's top prize. Marty became the first film to win both that award and the Oscar for Best Picture. It is sometimes confused with The Lost Weekend, which won Cannes's earlier Grand Prix rather than the Palme d'Or.
