Which Berlin Wall memorial includes the preserved Church of Reconciliation’s foundations?

The story behind the answer

The Berlin Wall Memorial includes the preserved foundations of the former Church of Reconciliation.

The memorial on Bernauer Straße preserves a section of the original border fortifications, including a watchtower, a portion of the outer wall, and the former border strip. The foundations of the Church of Reconciliation are marked within the grounds, showing how the border cut through the neighborhood and separated buildings from their surroundings.

The church stood inside the restricted border area and was demolished by East German authorities in 1985. After reunification, the site became part of a memorial and documentation center explaining the Wall’s construction, escape attempts, deaths, and effects on local residents.

This site differs from the East Side Gallery, which is a long open-air art installation on a surviving section of wall. It also differs from the Checkpoint Charlie Museum, a private museum focused especially on escape methods and border history.
