Which Berlin Wall crossing was named for the letter C in the NATO phonetic alphabet?
Answer
Checkpoint Charlie
Answer
Checkpoint Charlie
Checkpoint Charlie was named for the letter C in the NATO phonetic alphabet. It was the best-known crossing point between East and West Berlin during the Cold War.
The checkpoint stood on Friedrichstraße in central Berlin and connected the American sector of West Berlin with East Berlin. Its name followed a system used for Allied checkpoints: Checkpoint Alpha was at Helmstedt, Checkpoint Bravo was at Dreilinden, and Checkpoint Charlie was in the city.
The crossing was mainly used by Allied military personnel, diplomats, and foreign visitors rather than ordinary East German citizens. In October 1961, American and Soviet tanks faced each other there during a serious confrontation over Allied access rights.
The original checkpoint facilities were removed after the border opened. A replica guardhouse and an information display now mark the location, while the nearby Checkpoint Charlie museum documents escape attempts and the history of the divided city.
