Which Berlin Wall crossing was known as Checkpoint Bravo?
Answer
Dreilinden
Answer
Dreilinden
The Berlin Wall crossing known as Checkpoint Bravo was Dreilinden.
Checkpoint Bravo was the Western Allied name for the crossing at Dreilinden, on the southwestern edge of West Berlin. It connected West Berlin with West Germany via the transit route through East Germany toward the Helmstedt–Marienborn crossing.
The three Allied checkpoint names used in Berlin and its access routes followed the NATO phonetic alphabet: Checkpoint Alpha was Helmstedt, Checkpoint Bravo was Dreilinden, and Checkpoint Charlie was the crossing in central Berlin on Friedrichstraße. A common mix-up is to identify Checkpoint Bravo with Checkpoint Charlie, the best-known crossing inside Berlin itself.
After the Berlin Wall opened in November 1989 and Germany reunified in October 1990, the checkpoint lost its border-control role. The former site is now associated with the Berlin-Dreilinden motorway area and commemorative traces of Cold War transit.
