Which Berlin street became famous for houses cut by the Berlin Wall and escape attempts?
Answer
Bernauer Straße
Answer
Bernauer Straße
Bernauer Straße became famous for houses cut by the Berlin Wall and escape attempts.
The street formed part of the boundary between the French sector of West Berlin and East Berlin. When the border was sealed in August 1961, the pavement belonged to the West while the buildings on one side stood in the East. Residents in those buildings initially faced a bizarre and dangerous situation: windows and doors opened toward the western sector, making some homes potential escape routes.
East German authorities later sealed and demolished many of the buildings, leaving the border strip in their place. Bernauer Straße also became known for people jumping from windows before the buildings were closed, for tunnels, and for the Church of Reconciliation, which stood in the border zone until its demolition in 1985. Today the Berlin Wall Memorial preserves major sections of the historic site.
