Which Berlin landmark stood just east of the Berlin Wall during the city’s division?
Answer
Brandenburg Gate
Answer
Brandenburg Gate
The Brandenburg Gate stood just east of the Berlin Wall during the city’s division.
The neoclassical gate was located in East Berlin, immediately behind the fortified border zone. Although it became inaccessible to ordinary residents on both sides during much of the Wall period, its image remained a powerful symbol of divided Berlin. The gate had originally been built between 1788 and 1791 as one of the city’s major entrances.
Its location often causes confusion because photographs show the Wall in front of the monument from the West Berlin side. The gate itself was not a crossing point during the division. After the border opened, it became a major public symbol of reunification, and the Wall around it was removed. Today the Brandenburg Gate is one of Berlin’s best-known landmarks and a national symbol of Germany.
