Which bear species has a tongue up to 25 cm long?

The sun bear is the bear species known for a tongue that can extend up to about 25 centimetres. Its exceptionally long tongue is a specialised feeding tool, allowing the bear to reach honey, termites, ants, and other insects hidden inside tree cavities and nests.

The sun bear is the smallest living bear species and has a compact, powerful body, large claws, and a short black coat. Its scientific name is Helarctos malayanus, and it lives in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. The pale, often orange or cream-coloured chest marking that resembles a rising sun gives the animal its common name.

People sometimes confuse the sun bear with the similarly insect-eating sloth bear, but they are different species with different ranges and appearances. Sun bears are also strongly adapted to climbing and spend considerable time in trees. Because tropical food is available throughout the year, they do not hibernate.
