Omaha Beach is the setting of the opening invasion in Steven Spielberg’s 1998 film Saving Private Ryan.
The film begins on June 6, 1944, during the Allied landings in Normandy in World War II. Its extended opening sequence depicts American forces coming ashore at Omaha Beach under intense German fire. The scene is known for its handheld camerawork, muted color, sound design, and graphic depiction of battlefield confusion.
Saving Private Ryan then follows Captain John Miller, played by Tom Hanks, as he leads a small unit behind enemy lines. Their mission is to locate Private James Francis Ryan, whose three brothers have already died in the war, and bring him home.
Omaha was one of five landing beaches used by the Western Allies on D-Day. The film is not a documentary and fictionalizes its central rescue mission, but its opening sequence drew heavily on historical accounts of the Normandy landings.
