BBC Two first broadcast the first two series of The Office (UK).
The programme debuted on BBC Two on 9 July 2001, introducing viewers to David Brent and the employees of Wernham Hogg’s Slough branch. Its understated mockumentary style initially looked modest beside larger mainstream sitcoms, but the series gradually built an audience through word of mouth and critical acclaim. The second series followed on the same BBC channel in 2002.
BBC Two was an important fit for the show’s observational style. The channel had a strong reputation for distinctive comedy and programmes that could develop an audience without relying on the broadest possible mainstream format. The Office’s deliberately uncomfortable silences, documentary-style camera work and small workplace tensions became part of its identity.
A common mix-up concerns the Christmas specials. Although the two regular series were broadcast on BBC Two, the two-part finale moved to BBC One, airing on 26 and 27 December 2003. That change of channel does not alter the answer: BBC Two was the original home of series one and series two. Together, those series contained 12 half-hour episodes.
