Which BBC channel broadcast the final 1974 series?

The story behind the answer

The final 1974 series of Monty Python’s Flying Circus was broadcast by BBC2. The six-episode run aired from 31 October through 5 December 1974, completing the programme’s original television history.

The channel change followed the first three series, which had been broadcast on BBC1. BBC2 was the BBC’s second television channel and was associated with programmes aimed at audiences seeking more specialised, experimental, or culturally ambitious material. Monty Python’s surreal format fit comfortably within that reputation, even though the show had already become a major comedy success.

A common mix-up is to associate the series with BBC1 because the programme began there and is often listed with BBC1 as its main network. Channel 4 did not begin broadcasting until 1982, several years after the Pythons’ original television run had ended. ITV was a commercial network and did not carry this BBC production. The fourth series was also shortened after John Cleese’s departure.
