Which bassist played on Metallica’s self-titled album, commonly called The Black Album?

The story behind the answer

Jason Newsted played bass on Metallica’s self-titled album, commonly called The Black Album.

Newsted joined Metallica after the 1986 death of bassist Cliff Burton and had already appeared on the group’s previous full-length album, ...And Justice for All. The Black Album was therefore his second Metallica studio album and his first to receive a much more prominent, audible bass presence in the finished production.

The album’s core lineup was James Hetfield on vocals and rhythm guitar, Lars Ulrich on drums, Kirk Hammett on lead guitar, and Newsted on bass. Newsted also contributed songwriting ideas. In particular, he wrote the main riff of “My Friend of Misery,” which began as an idea for an instrumental piece.

A frequent historical mix-up places Robert Trujillo on the album because he later became Metallica’s bassist. Trujillo joined the band in 2003, long after The Black Album’s recording. Cliff Burton was Newsted’s predecessor, not a performer on this 1991 release.
