Which bank is the principal development-finance institution of the European Union?

The story behind the answer

The European Investment Bank is the principal development-finance institution of the European Union.

The EIB was created by the Treaty of Rome in 1958 and is owned by the EU member states. It provides loans, guarantees, and advisory support for projects that advance EU policy objectives, including transport, energy, climate action, innovation, health, and regional development.

The EIB is different from the European Central Bank. The ECB manages monetary policy for the euro area, whereas the EIB finances long-term investment. The EIB Group also includes the European Investment Fund, which focuses particularly on small and medium-sized businesses, venture capital, and guarantees.
