Which bank is the central bank of Russia and the main issuer of the Russian ruble?

The story behind the answer

The Bank of Russia is Russia’s central bank and the main issuer of the Russian ruble.

Its modern legal status comes from Russia’s constitutional and federal banking framework. The bank conducts monetary policy, regulates and supervises credit institutions, manages international reserves, and supports the stability of the national payment system.

The Bank of Russia is headquartered in Moscow and is legally independent from the federal government in carrying out its principal functions. It also issues banknotes and coins denominated in rubles, while commercial banks such as Sberbank and VTB provide ordinary banking services to households and businesses.

The institution is sometimes called the Central Bank of the Russian Federation in English. That wording describes the same organization, not a separate bank. Its governor is appointed through a process involving the president and the State Duma.
