Which bank is the central bank of Indonesia, established in 1953?
Answer
Bank Indonesia
Answer
Bank Indonesia
Bank Indonesia is the central bank of Indonesia, established in its modern form in 1953.
The institution succeeded the Dutch-owned De Javasche Bank after Indonesia nationalized it. Bank Indonesia became an independent central bank in 1999, strengthening the separation between monetary policy and government administration.
Its responsibilities include maintaining rupiah stability, conducting monetary policy, regulating payment systems, and contributing to financial-system stability. Bank Indonesia also issues Indonesia’s banknotes and coins. Its headquarters are in Jakarta.
Bank Rakyat Indonesia and Bank Negara Indonesia are major commercial banks, not the country’s central bank. The name Bank Indonesia can therefore be confused with ordinary banking brands, but its national monetary role is distinct from commercial lending and deposit-taking.
