Which bank began operating in 1925 as Mexico’s central bank?
Answer
Bank of Mexico
Answer
Bank of Mexico
The Bank of Mexico began operating in 1925 as Mexico’s central bank.
President Plutarco Elías Calles inaugurated the institution on September 1, 1925. Its creation fulfilled a constitutional goal of establishing a single authority for currency issuance and monetary management.
The Bank of Mexico, known in Spanish as Banco de México, is responsible for monetary policy and has the exclusive authority to issue Mexican banknotes. It is headquartered in Mexico City and is constitutionally autonomous.
The bank should not be confused with commercial institutions whose names include “National Bank of Mexico,” such as Citibanamex’s historical predecessor. The central bank’s role is policy and regulation, not ordinary retail banking.
