JPMorgan Chase is the bank among the world's largest companies by market cap formed in 2000 through the merger of Chase Manhattan and J.P. Morgan.
The merger combined Chase Manhattan Corporation with J.P. Morgan & Co. and created JPMorgan Chase & Co. The transaction joined a major commercial bank with a historic investment-banking and financial-services firm.
J.P. Morgan & Co. traced its roots to the nineteenth century, while Chase Manhattan also had a long history in American banking. The combined company later expanded through additional acquisitions, including Bank One in 2004 and Washington Mutual's banking operations in 2008.
JPMorgan Chase is sometimes confused with JPMorgan, which commonly refers to the firm's investment bank and institutional businesses. Chase generally refers to its consumer and commercial banking operations. Both names belong to the same overall company.
