Which band’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” video helped promote the 1984 Band Aid charity single?

The story behind the answer

Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” video promoted the 1984 charity single recorded by a large British and Irish artist collective.

Band Aid was assembled by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia. The recording brought together performers including Bono, George Michael, Sting, Boy George, Phil Collins, and members of Duran Duran and Culture Club.

The accompanying video showed artists recording and performing the song, helping audiences see the scale of the collaboration. It supported a charity release rather than a normal band campaign, and the single became one of the decade’s major Christmas hits.

Band Aid is often confused with Live Aid, the two-concert fundraising event held in 1985. Live Aid came later and featured many of the same performers, but Band Aid was the recording collective and “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” was its song.
