Pearl Jam’s 1998 music video for “Do the Evolution” was animated by Todd McFarlane. The video uses aggressive hand-drawn animation to present a rapid history of violence, domination, technology, and human destruction.
McFarlane, creator of the comic-book character Spawn, worked with Kevin Altieri and other artists on the production. The animation’s exaggerated figures and apocalyptic images match the song’s confrontational tone more closely than a conventional concert video would.
Pearl Jam released “Do the Evolution” on its 1998 album Yield. Lead vocalist Eddie Vedder and guitarist Dave Abbruzzese wrote the song, while the video’s imagery expands its criticism of human power and technological progress.
The clip is sometimes remembered simply as a Spawn-related animation because of McFarlane’s involvement. However, it was created specifically as a Pearl Jam music video and is not an episode of the Spawn television series.
