Pere Ubu released the 1978 album The Modern Dance, a landmark of American post-punk.
The Cleveland band formed in 1975 around singer David Thomas and guitarist Peter Laughner, who had previously been members of Rocket from the Tombs. Pere Ubu combined punk’s abrasive energy with electronic textures, unconventional song structures, and experimental studio techniques. Their sound was difficult to classify, but The Modern Dance became an important bridge between early punk and later alternative music.
The album includes songs such as “The Modern Dance,” “Non-Alignment Pact,” and “Final Solution.” It was recorded during a period when independent and underground releases often circulated through small labels and limited distribution. The album’s influence is sometimes overshadowed by more commercially successful records from New York and London, yet critics frequently cite it as a foundational American post-punk work. Devo also came from Ohio, but it was Pere Ubu that released this album.
