Radio Birdman released the 1977 studio album Radios Appear, a landmark record in Australian punk.
The Sydney band blended American garage rock, surf music and hard-edged punk with a strong sense of melody. Radios Appear was named after a line from a Blue Öyster Cult song and featured material that had already helped establish Radio Birdman in Australia’s underground scene.
The group was founded by Deniz Tek and Rob Younger, with Tek’s guitar playing and Younger’s forceful vocals shaping its sound. Radio Birdman also helped create a dedicated live environment through the Oxford Funhouse, a Sydney venue associated with the city’s emerging punk community.
The Saints were another foundational Australian punk band, especially associated with Brisbane, while The Birthday Party and The New Christs emerged in later or related scenes. Radios Appear is specifically Radio Birdman’s album, not a compilation by the wider Australian punk movement.
