Nirvana recorded the 1994 MTV Unplugged album Unplugged in New York.
The performance was filmed at Sony Music Studios in New York City on November 18, 1993, for MTV's Unplugged series. Rather than presenting only their biggest hits, Nirvana built a set around acoustic arrangements, lesser-known songs, and covers by artists including David Bowie and Lead Belly.
The album was released on November 1, 1994, several months after Kurt Cobain's death. It became one of Nirvana's most acclaimed releases and won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance in 1996.
A common mix-up is to call the program simply “Nirvana Unplugged.” The official album title is MTV Unplugged in New York, while the television series was MTV Unplugged.
