Nirvana recorded MTV Unplugged in New York on November 18, 1993, at Sony Music Studios in New York City. The performance featured Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and touring guitarist Pat Smear, with additional musicians including cellist Lori Goldston.
Rather than concentrating on the band’s biggest hits, the set mixed selected Nirvana songs with cover versions and less familiar material. The intimate arrangement and Cobain’s vocal performance gave the recording a distinctive character. It was broadcast by MTV in December 1993 and released as a live album in November 1994, after Cobain’s death.
Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden also made notable appearances on MTV Unplugged, which is why they are plausible alternatives. However, the widely celebrated 1993 set and the album MTV Unplugged in New York belong to Nirvana.
