Nonpoint recorded a cover of Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight” on their 2004 album Recoil. The band’s version transforms Collins’ atmospheric pop classic into a heavier, guitar-driven rock performance led by vocalist Elias Soriano.
Recoil was Nonpoint’s fourth studio album and was released through Lava Records on August 3, 2004. The cover appears as the album’s seventh track. It was not merely a bonus recording: the song later became one of the band’s most recognizable non-original tracks.
The recording gained a much wider audience when it was used in Michael Mann’s 2006 film Miami Vice and associated soundtrack. That exposure helped introduce Nonpoint’s interpretation to listeners who knew the original but had not followed the Florida-based rock band.
Phil Collins released the original song in 1981 on his debut solo album, Face Value. Nonpoint’s version is sometimes mistakenly attributed to the Miami Vice soundtrack alone, but it first appeared on Recoil.
