Which badminton tournament is the world's oldest and most prestigious?

The story behind the answer

The All England Open Badminton Championships is widely regarded as the world's oldest and most prestigious badminton tournament.

The first All England tournament was held in 1899 at Guildford, England. It initially included men's singles, men's doubles, women's singles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles, establishing a model for the comprehensive tournaments that followed. The event later moved to London and became a central fixture on the international badminton calendar.

Its title is not the same as a world championship. The BWF World Championships award official world titles, while the All England is a major annual open tournament in which players from many countries compete. Its historic status comes from its age, strong fields, and long list of champions.

The tournament has been staged at Birmingham's Utilita Arena since 1994, although editions have been affected by events such as the Second World War and the COVID-19 pandemic. It remains one of badminton's most coveted annual titles.
